Collection: Fun Art

Prints, paintings, and original drawings by Heather Karlsson

My name is Heather Karlsson, and I am the creator of Norman the Hedgehog.  Norman was inspired by my first visit to Sweden to meet my future in-laws.  In Sweden, they have wild hedgehogs (which are nothing like the cute little pet store variety) rampaging through the towns and fields and even in the apartment complex where my mother-in-law and father-in-law lived.  They don't see very well (the hedgehogs, not my in-laws), so if you stand very still, they will come and sniff your feet, then look up at you like you've offended their ancestors.  They don't appear to be very bright, either, but they are just so gosh-darn cute!  The first word I learned in Swedish was "igelkott," which is their word for hedgehog.  This was a source of much amusement for my in-laws, and for awhile was about the only word I could recognize in a conversation.  For the record, my Swedish has not improved all that much.

I suppose that by now you may be wondering why there is a shark trailing Norman in many of my pieces.  Well, once upon a time, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth (otherwise known as the early 1980s), I snuck out of bed to see what my parents were doing.  Unbeknownst to little me, they were watching "Jaws."  I peeked around the couch just as Jaws was biting someone in half, and that pretty much did it for me as far as water was concerned.

For a VERY long time afterward, I would pitch a fit every time it was bath time, for fear that there was a shark hiding in the bathtub.  This carried over into worries over other potential shark hiding places, like the kitchen sink, drainage ditches, swimming pools, creeks, toilets...  I confess, even now I am still not entirely convinced that a forty foot long great white shark won't rise from the depths of a swimming pool to eat me.

I hope you enjoy the whimsical world of Norman and his pal Shark, and thanks for taking the time to visit!

P.S.  Sharks are cool.  But just to be on the safe side, I stay firmly ensconced on land!
